Abstract

During the 2022 excavation season at the Western Suburban Complex (WSC), work on Room III (Blue Hall) has been continued. Two fragments of pottery discovered there date back to the ancient Chorasmian period. At the -210 and -212 cm levels from the benchmark, a flooring consisting of mud brick pavement was discovered (41–42 × 41–42 cm).

The most numerous finds in the 2022 season were fragments of painting, made with glue paint on loess plaster, covered with white loose soil – gypsum in the form of dihydrate. The polarizing microscopy of the composition of paint samples showed that the blue pigment consists of natural ultramarine, the red-brown one is red ocher, and the green paint is made of atacamite (copper hydroxychloride).

When Room III had ceased functioning normally, it lost its roof and has been gradually filled with various layers of ground. Judging by the complete absence of animal bones, hearths and/or bonfires, as well as the meager amount of ceramics, secondary habitation of the ruined premises is clearly improbable. The discovered brick pavements are not related to the period of the WSC’s functioning and appeared after the process of destruction of the walls had gone far enough.

The last stage of the destruction corresponds to the layer lying on top of the brickwork in the northeast corner of Room III, containing numerous fragments of painted plaster. The lifetime and destruction of the WSC fully corresponds to the ancient Chorasmian period.

В ходе полевого сезона 2022 г. (9–28 сентября) работы на раскопе Западного загородного комплекса (ЗЗК) велись только в помещении III (Синем зале). Наши каракалпакские коллеги (два реставратора и один археолог) сосредоточились на извлечении фрагментов живописи в квадрате 1, разбитом еще в 2021 г., и в северо-западном углу Синего зала. Российская команда1 продолжила траншею 2021 г. в южном направлении и разбила новый квадрат 2 (2 × 3 м). Сразу же после снятия верхнего надувного слоя была выявлена занимавшая значительную часть квадрата полусмытая, разъеденная такыром вымостка2 L-образной формы (рис. 1)3, мощностью в один кирпич (ок. 38–40 × 40–42 × 8(?) см), под которой шли слои, связанные с периодом запустения и разрушения здания.

Непосредственно под кирпичной выкладкой и такыром (рис. 2, 1)4 залегала небольшая прослойка песка от 2 до 5 см (рис. 2, 2). Ниже располагались хорошо читаемые слои лёссовидных натеков, перемежающиеся мелкими песчанистыми линзами (рис. 2, 3), под которыми располагался уровень финального разрушения здания – плотный жесткий глинистый слой с кусками кирпича (рис. 2, 4). Далее шел неоднородный слой лёссовидной супеси (рис. 2, 5–6) с примесями рыжего песка, золистыми включениями, вкраплениями угольков, песчаными линзами (рис. 2, 7–8) и фрагментами кирпича. В юго-западном углу квадрата был выявлен угол пахсового блока размером 20 × 20 см (рис. 2, 9). На отметках -210 и -212 см от реперной точки была открыта первоначальная вымостка «Синего зала» (рис. 2, 10), выполненная из сырцовых кирпичей размером 41–42 × 41–42 см. Никаких индивидуальных находок в квадрате обнаружено не было.

4 Затем площадь работ была расширена в восточном направлении квадратом 3 (2 × 3 м). С точки зрения стратиграфии квадрат 3 выглядит следующим образом: верхние слои представлены такыром (рис. 3, 1) и залегающими под ним слоями разрушений (рис. 3, 2), под которыми зафиксирована свита слоев первичного запустения/завала стен (рис. 3, 3) вплоть до песчаной прослойки (рис. 3, 6) и уровня первичной вымостки ЗЗК (рис. 3, 7). С уровня слоев первичного запустения (нижняя граница светлой лёссовидной супеси) в центральной части квадрата (80 см от СЗ, 60 см от СВ борта) была зафиксирована заполненная мелким желтым песком столбовая ямка № 1, частично впущенная в кирпичную вымостку помещения III (диаметр – 24 см, глубина – 35 см).

В плане стратиграфии квадраты 2 и 3 схожи. Среди особенностей последнего стоит отметить некоторое уменьшение мощности слоя финального разрушения в северо-восточном направлении, а также наличие промоин, образованных дождевыми потоками, которые в древности полностью или частично уничтожили сырцовые кирпичи первоначального пола и заполнили свои русла песком.
