Abstract

The article discusses issues related with the selection and training of oriental translators and interpreters (tolmaches) of the Ambassadorial chancellery in the 17th century. It thoroughly analyzes archival documents letters, decrees of Russian tsars, petitions, reports of oriental translators and tolmaches, extracts of the protocols of the Ambassadorial chancellery, reflecting the process of providing Russian foreign Ministry with those persons, who spoke Russian and Oriental languages.Translators and interpreters of the Ambassadorial chancellery were assigned from the baptized Tatars, from cities Romanov, Kasimov, Kashin; experts in Russian and Oriental languages, who served in Russian cities Kazan, Astrakhan, Siberia; some who were prisoners in the East for a long time. The last were accepted as interpreters, as they could not read documents written in Oriental languages. Translation work from Oriental languages was sometimes inherited from father to son, from brother to brother. Future translators of the Ambassadorial chancellerywere taught to read texts and grammar of Arabic, Persian and Turkic languages in Bukhara palace in Astrakhan, Russian texts and grammar in the Ambassadorial chancellery or monastery. During the study, they were provided with food for living and some money for books. Persons, identified as oriental translators or tolmaches of Ambassadorial chancellery, were thoroughly tested at special “exams” held due the tsar`s order by the most experienced translators. Their knowledge was tested for each language separately. The conclusion text of the translator’s reports was confirmed by their signatures on the back of the column sheets. A person appointed by tsar’s decree to the translator`s or tolmach`s position of the Ambassadorial chancellery had to take the oath.

XVII в.
