Abstract

The article examines the evolution of the attitude of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization-NATO and some of its members to the conflict situation in the South China Sea, where the interests of the United States and China are currently clashing. Gradually, NATO documents increasingly began to sound concerned about the rise of China, its activity in the South China Sea. In the documents of the organization 2020-2021. a definition of China "as the main military threat" is already emerging and calls on NATO members to "stand together against the challenge of China". There is a lot of evidence that this was done under pressure from Washington.

But some NATO members - France, Great Britain, and Germany- even before the South China Sea issue was included in NATO documents, began to send their warships and aircraft to the waters of this sea. In this sense, 2021 may be a landmark year, when all three leading NATO countries join the US 7th Fleet for joint maneuvers.

Formally, these actions are justified by the commitment of NATO countries to the principles of openness of maritime navigation, which is allegedly threatened by China. In fact, we are witnessing the manifestation of bloc solidarity and the subordination of NATO countries to the main player in the alliance - the United States. UK, France, and Germany also express their readiness to cooperate in the field of security with the QUAD member countries.

The participation of the armed forces of NATO countries in the conflict in the South China Sea turns the dispute of Asian countries over the ownership of deserted islands and lifeless rocks into a global clash.
