Abstract

Issues related to the translation of the Bible into Malay and its influence on interfaith relations in Malaysia have so far been practically not raised in Russian historiography. At the same time, these issues are important both from the point of view of the history of the spread of Christianity in the Malay world, the transformation of the Malay language itself, and the development of the religious and generally internal political situation in Malaysia. The Bible has been translated into Malay Since the colonial times and traditionally the word "God" was translated as Allah. The first translations appeared, however, not in the territory of modern Malaysia, but in the territory of the Netherlands India (Indonesia), where the Malay language acted as lingua franca. With the arrival of the British at the end of the 18th century, new missionaries appeared who were not satisfied with previous translations. They tried to improve the translations made by the Dutch  and especially important role in it was played by a Methodist missionary W. G. Shellabear. In the 1920s, efforts were made to create a single version of the Bible for both the Netherlands India and the British Malaya. But World War II prevented these plans. Subsequently, with the proclamation of independence of Indonesia (1945) and Malaya (1957), the rapid development of national versions of the Malay language in both countries made texts differ dramatically. But one thing remained the same: translation of the word God as Allah. At present, the Muslim theologians of Malaysia fearing of undermining the positions of Islam, are suspicious of the spread of the Bible in the Malay language and in fact have succeeded in banning it, arguing that the translation of the word God by the Arabic word Allah offends the feelings of Muslims. Periodically the Bible and other materials of the Christian organizations in which the word Allah is used are confiscated and destroyed. Such a policy introduces elements of instability into the political situation of the country. There is, however, the possibility that the change in the ruling regime in Malaysia in May 2018, when the influential political figures professing Christianity came into the power, could lead to a softening of the authorities' policy in this matter.

История переводов Библии на малайский язык
2 Переводы Библии на малайский язык имеют длительную историю и прослеживаются, в частности, с начала XVII в., когда христианские миссионеры прибыли на Малайский архипелаг. Первые переводы появились, однако, не на территории современной Малайзии, а на территории Нидерландской Индии (Индонезии), где малайский язык выступал в качестве lingua franca, облегчая взаимоотношения между различными национальными общинами и группами.
3 Первопроходцем переводов Библии стал протестант-голландец Альберт Корнелиус Руил (Albert Cornelius Ruyl; ?–?), который перевел Евангелие от Матфея на малайский язык в 1612 г., т.е. уже через год после публикации Библии короля Иакова. Этот перевод был напечатан в 1629 г. Яном Якобисом Паленштайном в Энкхуйзене (Нидерланды)1. Книга содержит также десять заповедей, Песнь Захарии, Песнь ангелов, Песнь Марии, Песнь Симеона Богоприимца, Апостольский символ веры, несколько отрывков из Псалмов, Отче наш и другие молитвы. Эта публикация, как и многие последующие, является двуязычной: малайский текст дается параллельно с голландским. О переводчике известно лишь, что он был сотрудником Объединенной Ост-Индской компании (ОИК)2. Эта редкая книга в настоящее время хранится в Вюртембергской библиотеке в Штутгарте и в Британском музее в Лондоне [Het, 1629]. Малайский перевод Евангелия от Матфея имеет более широкое значение в истории евангелизации мира, ибо стал первым переводом Библии за пределами Европы и Ближнего Востока [The Cambridge History of the Bible, 1970, р. 385]. 1. 2. Основана в 1602 г. в результате слияния нескольких голландских компаний по торговле с Индией. Получила исключительное право торговли и мореплавания в Тихом и Индийском океанах. К середине XVII в. смогла вытеснить из Индонезии всех европейских соперников и установить свою монополию. 1 января 1798 г. компания была ликвидирована, а все ее владения и имущество перешли к правительству.
4 Руил продолжил свою работу и перевел Евангелие от Марка, опубликовав его в 1638 г. вместе с Евангелием от Матфея, также в двуязычном варианте. В это же время другой сотрудник ОИК, Ян ван Хасел (Jan Van Hasel; ?–?), завершил перевод Евангелия от Луки и Евангелия от Иоанна, а священник из Батавии3 Юстус Херниус (Justus Heurnius; 1587–1652) – перевод «Деяний святых апостолов». Херниус сверил также переводы Руила и Хасела по греческому тексту и напечатал в 1651 г. в Амстердаме двуязычную книгу «Четыре Евангелия и Деяния святых апостолов». Кроме того, Ян ван Хасел и Юстус Херниус в 1652 г. перевели и издали «Псалтирь». Первым человеком, который перевел весь Новый Завет на малайский язык, стал священник Даниэль Браувер (Daniel Brouwerious; 1625–1673), это случилось в 1668 г. [Van den Ende, 1982, p. 220]. 3. 5 Перевод всей Библии был начат в 1691 г. по заказу Батавской церкви и при спонсорской поддержке ОИК Мелхиором Лейдеккером, приехавшим в 1675 г. на Восточную Яву в качестве капеллана. Когда он умер в 1701 г., работа была завершена на 90 процентов. Оставшаяся часть была закончена ван дер Вормом в том же году [Mengenal Alkitab Anda, 1982, р. 36]. Но издание в силу ряда причин было осуществлено значительно позже: в Нидерландах на латинице в 1733 г. и в Батавии на арабской графике (джави) в 1758 г. Этот перевод оставался главным в деятельности церкви на протяжении почти двух веков.
