Abstract

The article uses the material of the Slovak national corpus to examine the semantics of Slovak adverbs with the General meaning « », of which two adverbs – málokedy and zriedka – are analysed in terms of establishing synonymous or quasi-synonymous relations between them. In the first part of the article, the combinability of each adverb separately is studied from the perspective of the association measure Minimal sensitivity, logDice, and MI.log.f, and the main contexts of the corresponding lexeme appearance are also taken into account. In the second part of the article, situations of joint appearance of adverbs are considered. It is shown that adverbs are not completely synonymous: málokedy tends to denote unique or irregular situations and can be used to express a softened categoricity; in turn, zriedka is more characteristic of denoting situations that are regularly repeated, the lexeme can converge in meaning with adverbs of the «sometimes» group.
