Abstract

The article explores the Balkan names for garden sage (Salvia officinalis) and some other closely related species, suggests a complete onomasiologial analysis and states that isomotivational ties between Balkan languages (blossoming period, salutariness, flavour, comparison of the name with other plants with balsamic scent and so on). Furthermore, it considers all loan-words as a result of language contacts: Latinisms salvia and*medicaster (health and и healing) and Hellenisms – σφάκα, καρυóφυλλον, λίβανος and so on (scent).

KeywordsBalkan languages and dialects, phytonyms, tea, Salvia officinalis (sage), etymology, loan-words, onomasiology.
