Abstract

The article analyzes the existing hypotheses of the origin of the words Orthodox and Orthodoxy: 1) the erroneous perception of the second part of the composite ὀρθόδοξος δόξα as ‘gloryʼ vs. ʻfaith’ and 2) a change in the meaning of noun. jurisprudence, which is a typical translation of δικαιολογία ‘defense in courtʼ in accordance with ὀρθοδοξία with the subsequent levy of morphemes of glories and words. We consider all possible translations of Greek. ὀρθόδοξος: pravy, pravověrьny, pravoslavьny, pravoslovьny, prostoslavьny. Based on the material of the published dictionaries of Old Slavonic and Old Russian languages, the frequency of their use and the time of appearance in the Old Russian language are analyzed. By attracting quotes from the monuments that became available after the publication of the corresponding volumes of the dictionary, dating of the occurrence of the words prostitutes (Ilyin’s book of the XI century) and the right one in the phrase right versa (Sticherarion of the XII century, Sofiisky prologue of the XII/XIII century) are made more difficult. Explains the appearance of adj. prostitutes.
