Member of the dissertation and scientific-organizational councils of V.V. Vinogradov Russian Language Institute of the RAS.

In 1979, he graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

In 1984, Alexey Shmelev defended his candidate dissertation on the topic “Certainty and Uncertainty in the Names of Persons in the Russian Language”. In 1995 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Referential Mechanisms of the Russian Language”.

Alexey Shmelev taught at universities in France (Paris-Sorbonne), USA, Finland, Austria, Switzerland.

From 2006 to 2011, he taught various courses on Russian Studies and Cultural Studies for graduate students of the Russian Summer School at Middlebury College (USA).

Author of over 300 scientific papers. Under the guidance of Alexey Shmelev, 15 candidate and 3 doctoral dissertations were defended.
