Abstract

The article gives an updated look at the most important event in the history of China - the May 4th Movement of 1919. Both the causes and consequences of the Movement are presented against the backdrop of the Movement for a New Culture (1915-1925) and taking into account the influence of Westernization ideas on China , as well as the theory and practice of the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia. The interrelation of internal events and external influences on China is shown. The author emphasizes that in no country in the world did a social movement have such power and such a wide resonance for the further course of history as in China. The May 4th Movement developed against the backdrop of an intellectual upsurge across a wide spectrum. As history has shown, it was a turning point in the public life of China and raised the question of the further path of development of the country. Higher than before, the assessments of the “Movement for a New Culture” and the “May 4 Movement” of 1919 update the earlier understanding of the causes and content of the May 4 Movement of 1919.
