Protestant Missionary Accounts of Chinese Secret Societies in the Beginning of the 19th Century

The paper examines the earliest information by Europeans concerning activities of the secret societies–traditional public organizations that have played a significant role in history of China and continues to be a phenomenon of public life in China and abroad. By analogy with the “colonial school” of the studies of secret societies in China, it is proposed to single out the earliest period of the Protestant historiography of secret societies, tentatively designating it as a “missionary school” of William Milne and Robert Morrison. Amendments are done to the available bio-bibliographic data on Milne’s publications in The Indo-Chinese Gleaner. The authorship and time of the reports on secret societies in China delivered by R. Morrison at the Royal Asiatic Society are clarified. Milne’s reports indicated that the secret societies were anti-government, and some of them were anti-Qing. However, he did not notice the slogans for the restoration of the late Chinese Ming dynasty. The purpose of the destruction of the Qing dynasty is directly expressed in the materials of R. Morrison, which also talked about the hope for help from the spirits of the Ming emperors. It is noted that the ‘Mason paradigm’ of the study of secret societies proposed by W. Milne was based on the similarity of some formal aspects in their activities with the practice of the Freemason Society in Great Britain. At the same time, W. Milne pointed out the differences in the social status and social role of such societies in Europe and in China.

1	Обращаясь к историографии китайских тайных обществ, нетрудно заметить, что европейские исследования этой темы были вызваны к жизни в начале XIX века самим фактом возросшей роли таких объединений по непосредственным наблюдениям иностранцев. На самом деле определенный коммунализм самоорганизации китайского населения в форме круговой поруки (баоцзя 保甲), волостных договоров (сян юэ 鄉約), братств добра (шань тан 善堂) и т. д. как дополнений к государственной администрации только по письменным источникам вполне достоверно прослеживается с раннего средневековья, но, по-видимому, он существовал и в древности [Майоров, Стеженская, 2022]. Однако, даже такое масштабное восстание 1796–1804 годов под лозунгами секты «Байляньцзяо», охватившее Сычуань, Хунань, Хубэй, Шэньси, Ганьсу, Хэнань, Аньхуй, в свое время не привлекло к себе внимания иностранных историков, как утверждала Екатерина Борисовна Поршнева (1931–2018) [Поршнева, 1972, с. 3–7, 149]. Н.Я. Бичурин, поясняя положения цинского законодательства, сообщал о различных преступных «обществах» и «братствах», скрепленных взаимными клятвами, но подробно на этой теме не останавливался [Бичурин, 2002, с. 200, 230; Иакинф, 1840, с. 52]. Только значительно позднее в отечественной историографии появились работы по тайным обществам. В них рассматривались исторические истоки, идейные направления деятельности, роль тайных обществ в революционном движении в Китае ХХ века [Тайные общества в старом Китае, 1970; Костяева, 1995]. Отмечалась эволюция тайных обществ либо в современные преступные сообщества, либо в новые синкретические религии [Этническая история китайцев в XIX – начале XX века, 1993, с. 75–77; Тертицкий, 2000]. По вполне понятным причинам в поле зрения исследований этого общественного явления в ХХ веке больше попадали такие сообщества и движения вне пределов Китайской Народной Республики [Костяева, 1997].
2	Можно сказать, что в западной историографии к середине XIX века и позднее в ходе Тайпинского восстания (1850–1864 гг.) такое направление исследований общественной жизни китайцев уже вполне оформилось. В своей книге 1866 года об Обществе Неба и Земли голландский синолог Густав Шлегель (1840–1903) привел краткую библиографию из семи работ своих предшественников [Schlegel, 1866, p. VI]. Этот период изучения тайных обществ принято называть «колониальной школой» [Захаров, 2007, с. 27–29]. И сам Шлегель, и один авторов из его библиографии, его старший коллега по Лейденскому университету, немец И.Й. Гофман (J.J. Hoffmann, 1805–1878) хотя и были профессиональными востоковедами, но отметились службой переводчиками в колониальной администрации Голландской Ост-Индии.
3	А с другой стороны, ничто не мешает, а, пожалуй, даже и требует, выделить в историографии китайских тайных обществ, которая только началась с наступлением XIX века, более ранний период и условно назвать его миссионерским или протестантско-миссионерским, имея в виду именно протестантских миссионеров, конечно. В той же бибилографии Шлегеля представлены проповедники Лондонского миссионерского общества У. Милн (William Milne, 1785-1822) и Р. Моррисон (Robert Morrison, 1782-1834), проповедник, по-видимому, Нидерландского миссионерского общества немец или голландец Э.Х. Рётгер (E.H. Röttger). В целом отмечается, что в ранний период протестантские миссионеры оказали решающее влияние не только на изучение тайных обществ, но и на развитие британского колониализма и синологии в Китае вообще [Triad Societies, 2000, p. x].
