Abstract

<p >The article provides a bibliographic commentary on O.M. Kovalevsky's entry in the Diary of Activities for 1832 regarding secret societies in China. This is one of the earliest mentions of this scientific problem in Russian Sinology. The source of the record is defined as a message in the missionary magazine Indo-Chinese Gleaner for 1818, which is an English translation of the text from the official Qing Peking Gazette for 1817. The author substantiates the attribution of the translation to the preacher of the London Missionary Society, W. Milne. His independent authorship should belong to the second part of the journal message listing the secret societies that existed and a short comment on their practice. We refer only to one of his entries in the Diary of Activities for 1832, dedicated to secret societies in China. A small entry in the available editions of this diary has remained without comment. This topic became popular in the middle of the XIX century on the eve of the Taiping Uprising and remains so in modern Chinese studies. The entry of Józef Kovalevski not only testifies to his keen sense of regional studies, but also points to possible, albeit not realized at the time, trends in future Chinese studies education. Kovalevski's record, in fact, introduces into scientific use a problem that really attracted the attention of domestic sinologists only in the XX century. 1	Осип Михайлович Ковалевский (1801-1878) известен, прежде всего, как выдающийся монголовед и буддолог. Вместе с тем как организатор востоковедного образования в Императорском Казанском университете он всегда держал в поле своего зрения исследования Китая. Как отмечал В. Г. Дацышен, «вклад О.М. Ковалевского в создание казанского китаеведения … был огромным [Дацышен, 2018, с. 12]. В речи на торжественном собрании Императорского Казанского университета в августе 1837 года Ковалевский особо подчеркивал значение этой страны для российского востоковедения [Ковалевский, 2002, с. 51]. Его непосредственное внимание к Китаю, особенно во время пребывания в этой стране, и контакты с коллегами-китаеведами уже обсуждались в нашей литературе [Хохлов, 2004, с. 11; Полянская и др., 2021]. Публикация дневника Ковалевского [Полянская, 2012, с. 42-133; Полянская, 2019, с. 241-305; Биография, 2020, с. 367-423], который он вел после возвращения из Китая во время своего пребывания в научной и учебной командировке от Казанского университета в Забайкалье, позволяет утверждать, что и тогда он питал большой интерес к Китаю.
2	Мы обращаемся лишь к одной его записи в «Дневнике занятий за 1832 г.», посвященной тайным обществам в Китае [Отдел, F11-3]. Небольшая сама по себе запись в имеющихся изданиях этого дневника по понятным причинам практически осталась без комментария. Принимая во внимание, насколько эта тема стала популярной в середине XIX века накануне Тайпинского восстания и остается таковой в современном китаеведении, запись О. М. Ковалевского не только свидетельствует о его остром страноведческом чутье, но и указывает на возможные, пусть и не реализованные в свое время, тенденции в будущем китаеведческом образовании. Запись Ковалевского, по сути, вводит в научный обиход проблему, которая по-настоящему привлекла внимание отечественных китаеведов только в XX веке [Тайные, 1970, с. 4; Костяева, 1995, с. 5; Костяева, 1997].
3	Запись представляет собой выписку на английском языке из миссионерского журнала. Нам удалось выяснить, что это был номер IV, помеченный маем месяцем, за 1818 год журнала «The Indo-Chinese Gleaner» («Индо-Китайская подборка») [The Indo-Chinese, 1818, № IV, p. 87-88], издававшегося в Малакке проповедниками Лондонского миссионерского общества. Журнал очевидно имел неплохо налаженные каналы распространения по миссиям Лондонского общества. Ковалевский познакомился с журналом во время своего проживания в Селенгинске у шотландского миссионера Роберта Юилля (Robert Yuille, 1786-1861) , который в это время вместе с другими своими коллегами занимался переводом Священного Писания на монгольский и бурятский языки. Малаккская «Подборка» пользовалась определенным авторитетом среди востоковедов и миссионеров. Нередко, иногда довольно быстро, а иногда годы спустя, материалы из этого журнала перепечатывались в других изданиях как в Индии, так и в Европе.
