Abstract

The article investigates the information about the inhabitants of sub-Saharan Africa found in Egyptian hagiographic literature of the Late Antiquity. The entire array of data can be divided into four main themes: information about the Black monks, contacts of the local population with Black Africans, data about the attacks of neighboring tribes (mainly the Beja and the Noba), and information about the demons visiting monks as "Ethiopians". Special attention is drawn to the last topic, as well as to the relationship between the appearance of the hagiographical “topos” of Black demon and the ideas about Black Africans existing in Egypt in the Late Antique period.
