Abstract

The paper discusses the major issues of presentation of stylistic information about the substandard lexemes of the modern Russian language in the general explanatory dictionary (on the material of the “Academic Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language”). The main directions of changes in the use of vernacular vocabulary in recent decades are considered: substandard lexemes raise their stylistic status or become obsolete. The paper presents verification methods for studying stylistic characteristics of vernacular vocabulary (such as analysis of data from modern dictionaries, the Russian National corpus and other sources). The article examines the change in the stylistic status of both individual lexemes and word-formation types. Various ways of enlargement of substandard vocabulary in modern Russian are described, such as the transition from jargons (professional, sports, and criminal) and the development of a new word meaning. The article emphasizes that the change in the stylistic status of substandard lexemes is influenced by a set of different factors, that should be taken into account by the authors of the explanatory dictionary.
