Abstract

The article considers the source of the epigraph to the article by L.V. Shcherba “On the Threefold Aspect of the Language Phenomena and on Experimentation in Linguistics”, which reads as follows: “Nihil est in dicendo, quod non inhaereat grammaticae vel hominum actioni. Nihil est in grammatica, quod non fuerit in dicto”. Neither in the first publication of this article, nor in its subsequent reprints, the source was indicated. Here, it is shown that the epigraph is a rephrasing of the statement by the sensualist J. Locke “Nihil est in intellectu, quod non prius fuerit in sensu&8j1;, which was so widely known in the 19th and early 20th century that it was often quoted and reworded, without attribution, in various scholarly works.
