Abstract

The article is dealing with one of the topos of consolatio mortis– mourning for the dead as it was analysed in the writings of Symeon of Polotsk: «Vertograd mnogocvĕtnyj» (verse «Mertvych nie plakatsya») and sermon collection «Obed duševnyj» (a sermon fragment on the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost). It is concluded that the text of the Jesuit Matthias Faber (1586/87–1653), which became the source for the given verse (Antony Hippisley), was also used by Symeon in the compilation of his sermon. The plot of the dangers of excessive grief was based on the distich of the English Dominican Robert Holcot (ca. 1290–1349); from the middle of the fourteenth century, it was used as a popular mnemotechnical tool and presented in ten items arguing against crying on the dead.
