Abstract

The article is devoted to the interpretation of the role of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the Orthodox world by the government of the Second Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in connection with his attempts to receive the blessing of Patriarch Meletius IV (Metaxakis) for the autocephaly of the Polish Orthodox Church, proclaimed in June 1922. The Patriarchate of Constantinople sought to use the Polish question to implement its program of reorganizing the Patriarchate of Constantinople into the administrative center of world Orthodoxy. However, the unpreparedness of the Polish government to compromise with the patriarchy ultimately led to a delay in the proclamation of autocephaly of the Polish Church, which could have happened already in 1923. The study is based on archival documents, many of which are first introduced into scientific circulation.
