Abstract

The article deals with the phenomenon of draft for military service of the Maya natives during the early period of the Caste War of Yucatan (1847-1901), which was a high-scale etnosocial conflict that became a part of the long epoch of instability and political violence in the peninsula in 19th century. The necessity of labor force in the theatre of war drew up the draft of natives who had stayed loyal to the government. They were motivated by obtaining the hidalgo title and the exemption from taxes as a package. However, the practice of employment of auxiliary native troops was not limited to menial chores, and they became an integral part of government armed forces of Mexico.
