Abstract

This paper presents an archaic ritual intended to invoke rain named dodola, which was performed by the Serbian community of Čip/Szigetcsép in Hungary until the 1950’s. The data were collected in the ethnolinguistic and anthropolinguistic fieldwork carried out in the period 2001-2008 by the research team of the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA. The analysis focuses upon the process of transition of the extinguished rain ritual from cultural to communicative memory of the community, that is from ritual to narrative mode.

Keywordsrain invocation dodola, Serbs in Hungary, ethnolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, fieldwork, cultural memory, communicative memory, narrative.
AcknowledgmentThe work was done in the framework of the project of the Institute for Balkan studies SASA "Language, folklore, migrations in the Balkans" (No. 178010) funded by the Ministry of education, science and technological development of the Republic of Serbia.
