Abstract

The article strives to reconstruct the ideas of Russian national uniqueness on the material of reviews and estimations of the Russian expositions on the exhibitions of the second half of the nineteenth century (of the world industrial exhibitions and the Ethnographic exhibition of 1867). The article considers some most typical elements of appearance, content and decoration of the pavilions, which gave rise to the discussion about the Russianness and historical legacy of Russia. The task of outer («export») representation of the country sharpened the question of the symbols and embodiments of the «true» Russianness. In the centre of author’s attention are the instruments and strategies of its visualisation in the period of nation-building in the Russian Empire.
