Abstract

Methodological and theoretical analysis of Ya. A. Ponomarev's solution of the mind-body problem is carried out. It is noted that Ya. A. Ponomarev used the principle of two-dimensionality, ontological and epistemological plans of analysis. Ponomarev assumed the world is one and its unity is in its materiality. In solving the mind-body problem he relied on such concepts as interaction and reflection. It is specifies that the relations between “original-modeling system-model-copy” reveal the meaning of mental reflection idea in Ya. A. Ponomarev’s concept. The original is a fragment of reality with which a living organism with modeling (nervous) system interacts. As a result of interaction with the original, models of the latter (dynamic brain models) are formed in the body's modeling system. Ya. A. Ponomarev believed that a copy is an ideal entity, an image of the original which is created on the basis of the model and is immaterial unlike the model which is material. Ponomarev stressed that ideal is not a substance, but an abstraction. It is built by a cognizing person by means of consciousness and it is the result of comparison between the imprint of the object in consciousness (model) and the object itself, which exists outside of it. There is an ontological difference between the original and the model and an epistemological similarity between the original and the copy. Ponomarev questioned the postulate of the ideal as a qualitative peculiarity of the psychic, considering that the ideal can be a characteristic of any form of reflection. He considered that understanding of psychic qualitative peculiarity is possible when analyzing its epistemological aspect in unity with the ontological one. In this case, the mind-body problem is removed and the underlying myth is destroyed. Ponomarev proposed to use the scientific analogue of the mind-body problem – the problem of relationship of the model to the modeling system. The conclusion that Ya. A. Ponomarev’s ideas about the mind-body problem are fundamental and reveal the reserves for modern psychological science is drawn.
