Abstract

Knowledge and usage of the official Chinese language — Mandarin — is an aspiration of most of the residents in contemporary China. By creating a “middle-income society” the Chinese State spreads the official Chinese language among the less educated poor. In parallel, efforts are being made to preserve the rich linguistic heritage and linguistic diversity of the multi-ethnic and multi-dialect country.

Keywordslanguage policy, spread of Putonghua, Chinese dialects, “society of average prosperity”, poverty eradication
