Abstract

The article is devoted to the activities of the Russian surgeon, medicine doctor S. K. Sofoterov as a participant of sanitary missions and institutions of the Russian Red Cross Society (RRC) in Serbia from the First Balkan War to the Second World War. S. K. Sophoterov gained his work experience in the Red Cross while he was a student of the Medical Faculty, Tomsk University. The Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) began, and he got a job as a resident in the surgical department of the Community of the Sisters of Charity in Tomsk. Around the same time, he began to engage in scientific work. The news of the beginning of the 1st Balkan War (1912-1913) found him in Vienna, where he was trained in one of the leading clinics. The head office of the Russian Red Cross Society appointed Sophoterov the senior doctor of the infirmary of the Kaufman Community of the Sisters of Charity and ordered him to assume the position immediately. During this period, S. K. Sophoterov demostrated not only his professional skills, but also analytical abilities: his reports contained both information on the current work of the infirmary and suggestions for improvement.

To some extent his biography was typical for a RRC surgeon: he had to take part in all wars in the beginning of the 20th century in the Balkans. A notable contribution to the charity activity was made by Sofoterov during the First World War. He is the author of the plan of sanitary rehabilitation of a temporary Serbian capital - Nish city and its surroundings - at the time of typhus epidemics in 1915; thanks to his efforts the Russian hospital in Saloniki was expanded, the assistance to the ill and wounded Russian and Serbian warriors was arranged. After leaving Russia, he worked in RRC clinic in Belgrade and was engaged in research.
