Abstract

In the American society there have been and still are different conflicting social groups. The main ones at most stages are: economic, racial and ethnic, religious, gender, generational. Soviet americanists paid particular attention to the class conflict. Attention was also paid to racial conflicts, but, in fact, religious and gender conflicts were ignored. Among American authors, there is a diversity in understanding of the correlation between different social conflicts. African American authors give priority to racial conflict. At the present stage, feminist authors interpret the main conflict of the nation as women overcoming their enslavement by men as well as male chauvinism but without due reason. A list of major social conflicts in the United States is proposed by the author, who proceeds from the fact that their role and relationship were different at different stages of American history. Analysis of this topic is the content of the article. In colonial America, religious conflict was of particular importance. In the period between the Revolution of the late 18th century and the Civil War, the main conflict was the conflict between the North and South of the United States. In the period from the last quarter of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, the conflict between the upper class and the lower layers came to the fore. In postindustrial America, racial, ethnic, gender, generational conflicts have taken the lead. Cultural wars acquired generalization.
