Justiniana Prima and the Status of Justinian’s Code in the Serbian Political Culture of the 15th — 18th Centuries

The article is devoted to the study of the relationship between the facts of dissemination of the Slavic version of The Code of Justinian in the Serbian manuscript tradition and the evolution of the title of the Serbian patriarch who, since the 1690s, began to call himself the archbishop of “Justiniana Prima”. It is shown that the idea of “Justiniana Prima” as a historical Serbian territory was appropriated by Patriarch Arsenije III Crnojević (1633—1706) from the Count of the Holy Roman Empire George Branković (1645—1711), who also self-proclaimed himself as a Serbian despot. The claims of Arsenije III, which corresponded to these historical ideas, were reflected in the modification of the hierarch’s title. The Serbian scriber and calligrapher Veljko Popović, who worked in the archbishop’s chancellery, became the actual provider of this concept, having created, at least twice, the manuscripts of the Justinian Code in subsequent years. Our study allows suggesting that the distribution of the second edition of The Code of Justinian together with the Stefan Dušan’s Code in the 1690s — 1700s came from the patriarch’s office, and it was related to the activities of the scribes of Veljko Popović’s circle. Apparently, the name of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian the Great, whose institutions were associated by Orthodox Serbs to the legendary historical rights on the canonical territory of Eastern Illyricum served for them at the end of the 17^th century, and then throughout the 18th century as a kind of symbol of political and confessional self-identification.
