Iron Sailor: Captain James Cook on the Background of the Era

The article is dedicated to Captain James Cook, the great navigator who became the symbol of naval might of the British Empire. The biography of this sailor, who devoted all his life to Sea and Navy, is analyzed on the background of the events of the Age of the Enlightenment, of which Cook was a prominent representative. He became a soldier and a military man, a hydrograph and a scientist, a humanist, and a colonizer. In a paradoxical way, Cook combined all the contradictory features of the 18th century, rose to the heights of the British naval elite and became a true hero of British expansion.
