In Search of Objectivity: The Work of N.N. Ladygina-Kohts and the Problem of the Human-Animal Boundary [V poiskakh ob’ektivnosti: issledovaniia N.N. Ladyginoi-Kots i problema razgranicheniia liudei i zhivotnykh]

Abstract

Examining the scientific work of Nadezhda Nikolaevna Ladygina-Kohts (1889–1963), the Soviet primate scientist and the pioneer of the study of animal intellect, also known as Nadie Kohts, this article focuses on her ideas about the cardinal, “qualitative” distinctions that exist between the human intellect and the intellect of the anthropoid apes. I argue that strengthening the human-animal boundary became an important tool in Ladygina’s polemics against the academic racism that linked the “inferior” human races to anthropoid apes – with the beginning of the war against Nazism, the threat of racism became an important incentive for her research. Analyzing Ladygina-Kohts’ post-WWII studies of the tool-making activity in chimpanzee, I emphasize its continuity with the work of the Dutch zoopsychologist Frederik J.J. Buytendijk and his school, and focus on the importance of her approach to the problem of human-animal boundaries, comparing her ideas with the perspective of the modern evolutionary synthesis.

1 В 1935 г. директор Государственного Дарвиновского музея А.Ф. Котс написал письмо “уполномоченному Главлита И.В. Лукинскому”, цензору новой книги его жены – известной исследовательницы поведения животных Надежды Николаевны Ладыгиной-Котс – “Дитя шимпанзе и дитя человека в их инстинктах, играх и выразительных эмоциях” (Ладыгина-Котс 1935; Ladygina-Kohts 2002). Рукопись книги была посвящена сравнительному изучению поведения детеныша шимпанзе Иони, жившего у Котсов в 1913–1916 гг., и родившегося в 1925 г. собственного их сына Рудольфа (Руди). Прочитавший рукопись и сделавший множество замечаний цензор настаивал на удалении из книги стихотворного пролога, в котором Ладыгина говорила о важности для исследователя эмпатии и эмоционального контакта с изучаемым шимпанзе. Видимо, отчаявшись убедить цензора в ценности эмоций, позволявших “угадать”, в каком состоянии и настроении находится шимпанзе, и подобрать соответствующий метод исследования, Александр Федорович Котс апеллировал к праву жены быть женщиной: «…требовать от нее выражаться “мужским” и сухим, несвойственным ей стилем вряд ли уместно» (АГДМ 1. 2 Спор с цензором заставляет задуматься над проблемой научной объективности – ее “негативной” природой: согласно Л. Дастон и П. Галисону, история объективности в науке может быть написана как история того, “каким образом, почему и когда те или иные формы субъективности начинают восприниматься как опасно субъективные” (Daston, Galison 1992: 82). Во времена Ладыгиной-Котс указание на “личный”, эмоциональный контакт между исследователем и подопытным животным воспринималось с подозрением не только сталинскими цензорами, опасливо относившимися к проявлению “необычных”, не совпадавших с клише эмоций, но и психологами-бихевиористами, усматривавшими в них источник антропоморфной ошибки: у ученого нет способа узнать о содержании сознания животного – это содержание можно лишь выдумать2. Убеждение в том, что вопрос об уме и сознании животного можно решить положительно, используя эмоциональный контакт и эмпатию как средство, как важное условие работы с шимпанзе, Ладыгина-Котс обосновала в своей ранней книге “Исследование познавательных способностей шимпанзе” – вышедшем в 1923 г. первом, монографическом описании поведения и интеллекта Иони, где главное внимание уделялось “развивающему обучению”, по определению исследовательницы (Ладыгина-Котс 1923). Шимпанзе, по мнению Ладыгиной, обладал способностью к абстракции – Иони можно было научить выбирать предмет определенных формы, цвета и размера, в соответствии с предъявляемым образцом; при этом шимпанзе понимал принцип выбора, поскольку специально принятые меры исключали возможность “подсказки” со стороны исследовательницы. Этот метод, получивший название “выбор на образец” (нем. – Wahl nach Muster, англ. – matching by sample), был вскоре заимствован и развит немецким зоопсихологом О. Кёлером, доказавшим в своих классических опытах способность к счету у птиц. В то же время сама исследовательница пришла уже в 1935 г. к выводу об ограниченности способностей шимпанзе, а впоследствии – к идее существующих между мышлением человека и человекообразных обезьян коренных различий, изучению которых были посвящены ее послевоенные работы. 2.
