Epigraphy as the Key Source on Zheng He Expeditions and Its Modern Interpretation: Translation and Comments

Abstract

Zheng He expeditions (1405–1433) can be rightfully considered one of the most significant events in the history of China and international relations. Research on this topic began in the end of the 19th century and continues up to this day. The main difficulty in studying these expeditions is considered to be a small quantity of primary sources – most of such documents were intentionally destroyed in 1470s. The written evidence which survived has already been thoroughly studied and translated into European languages. Nevertheless, epigraphical sources received much less attention, works on some of them are absent from both Western and Russian historiography. This article aims at addressing this gap by providing the reader with a general understanding of types and specific features of such sources. In their turn, these sources provide additional information on Zheng He’s personality, the preparation and progress of the expeditions. This paper analyzes not only well-known epigraphical sources: “Ma Hazhi’s epitaph”, “Galle trilingual stele”, “Inscription on stone in the palace of the Celestial Spouse at Liujiagang in eastern Lu in memory of the intercourse with the barbarians” as well as “Record of the miraculous answer to prayer of the goddess, the Celestial Spouse” but also the lesser known “Record of the reconstruction of the devout mosque”, “Memorial inscription about Zheng He visiting [a cemetery] and burning incenses [while] passing through Quanzhou on the way down to the foreign [countries]” and “Stele fragment at Nanjing's Jinghai temple”. An appendix to this paper includes the translation of several epigraphical sources by late A.A. Bokshchanin (1935–2014) and the author of this article. This article is dedicated to the memory of A.A. Bokshchanin, a prominent sinologist who was a specialist in the history of the Ming dynasty and who laid the foundation of the studies of early Ming foreign policy in Soviet and Russian historiography.

1 Введение
2 После установления власти новой империи Мин в 1368 г. её родоначальник, Чжу Юаньчжан 朱元璋 (1328–1398), был в первую очередь обеспокоен легитимизацией своей власти и возобновлением внешнеполитических отношений с соседними странами. В том числе для этого в том же году были отправлены послы почти во все заморские страны для провозглашения воцарения новой династии. Этим было положено начало политики возвращения к традиционной системе взаимоотношений с внешним миром, которая в значительной степени была нарушена во время правления предыдущей монгольской династии. Обмен официальными дипломатическими миссиями вновь стал основным видом контактов между Китаем и заморскими странами и главным источником информации об ином, а частная морская торговля на долгое время была запрещена. Кульминацией этих взаимоотношений явились морские экспедиции в страны Западного Океана под командованием адмирала Чжэн Хэ (1405–1433). Существуют разные точки зрения на основную причину снаряжения этих плаваний: поиск пропавшего императора Чжу Юньвэня 朱允炆 (1377–1402), внука Чжу Юньчжана, тело которого не было обнаружено после захвата Нанкина и прихода к власти Чжу Ди 朱棣 (1360–1424) в ходе войны Цзиннань 靖難 (1399–1402)1; поиск союзников в возможной борьбе против империи Тимуридов; распространение политического и экономического влияния Китая; легитимизация власти Чжу Ди, который незаконно узурпировал престол, и т.д. В ходе правления Чжу Ди (1402–1424) было отправлено шесть полномасштабных экспедиций, однако уже в 1421 году они были приостановлены. Его преемник, Чжу Гаочи 朱高熾 вообще повелел запретить дальнейшее снаряжение экспедиций и расформировал флот. Однако затем последовал короткий период попытки возобновления активных внешних связей, в который флот Чжэн Хэ отправился в Западный океан в последний, седьмой раз. Тем не менее, расходы на снаряжение кораблей и ответные подарки правителям других стран стали основным предлогом окончательного сворачивания этой кампании и перехода к пассивному ведению дипломатических отношений, который был инициирован не столько самими императорами Чжу Гаочи и Чжу Чжаньцзи, сколько противниками развития внешних связей среди чиновников [Бокщанин, 1968, с. 113–115]. 1. 3 Несмотря на сравнительно короткий период активизации официальных дипломатических отношений с заморскими странами со стороны Китая, плавания Чжэн Хэ оставили большой след как в истории самого Срединного государства, так и в истории международных отношений в принципе, ведь они предшествовали экспедициям Колумба, Васко да Гамы и других европейских первооткрывателей, а по своим масштабам значительно превосходили их. Именно поэтому их академическое изучение началось достаточно давно и продолжается до сих пор.
