AbstractThe paper examines the earliest information by the Europeans concerning activities of the secret societies – traditional public organizations that have played a significant role in history of China and continues to be a phenomenon of public life in China and abroad. Identification of the 1811 report on secret societies in Dutch, which had been considered the earliest, was succeeded in the 1811 Belgian publication. Its attribution to French naturalist L. T. Leschenault de la Tour (1773–1826) is proven. The French original of this account is identified; its text larger version and divergences from the Dutch translation are indicated. The circum-stances of Leschenault's obtaining information of the Chinese secret societies in China on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies are examined. A linguistic commentary is given on the dialect names of the secret societies and the Chinese personal names of its leadership reported by him. The Russian explorer I.F. Kruzenshtern is described as the first European to report on secret societies in China in Part 2 of the Russian edition of his Voyage Round the World ... of the 1810. The exact time of the original German edition publication of this book is specified. Variety of assessments of secret societies’ nature by Kruzenshtern and Leshenault are elucidated. Their difference from later assessments by Protestant missionaries W. Milne and R. Morrison, who proposed the ‘Masonic paradigm’ is demonstrated. The four original texts by Kruzenshtern and Leshenault with their accounts of secret societies in China are provided as Supplements.

AU RÉDACTEUR
1 Как отмечал Н.Я. Бичурин, для получения верных сведений о Китае «не довольно одного знания китайского языка», требуются также «верный взгляд на вещи» и «проницательное соображение» [Бичурин, 2002, с. 3]. Действительно, история востоковедения не ограничивается работами ученых–востоковедов, а некоторые востоковедные проблемы обязаны своей постановкой, казалось бы, людям, далеким от этой области. Тайные сообщества, братства, нередко называемые также триадами или носящие иные названия, хотя и являются порождением традиционного китайского общества, до сих пор остаются теневым явлением общественной жизни, особенно в среде китайской диаспоры за рубежом. Научная проблема тайных обществ Китая в мировом китаеведении впервые была сформулирована более двухсот лет назад. В настоящее время начало изучения этой проблематики связывается с работами протестантского проповедника Лондонского миссионерского общества в Малакке Уильяма Милна (William Milne, 1785–1822) [Lunde, 2004, p. 34; McCarthy, 2011, p. 227], который в 1817 г. опубликовал заметку в своем журнале «Индо-Китайская подборка» [Of The Tea sect, 1817]. Милн и его соратник Роберт Моррисон (Robert Morrison, 1782–1834) позднее подготовили специальные доклады для английского Королевского Азиатского общества [XIV. Some account of a secret association in China, 1825; Manifesto in the Chinese Language, 1834]. Оба они владели китайским языком, занимались переводами Библии на китайский язык и могли воочию наблюдать повседневную жизнь местного китайского населения.
2 Однако, если мы обратимся к известной антологии научных работ о китайских тайных обществах, то увидим, что начало исследований на эту тему было положено более ранней публикацией 1811 г. на нидерландском (голландском) языке. Это заметка относительно тайных обществ некоего Лешенаута (Leschenaut) [Triad, 2000, p. xvii, 1–5]. Действительно, в голландском альманахе «Современная отечественная библиотека науки, искусства и [хорошего] вкуса» за 1811 г. напечатана небольшая заметка об Обществе Неба и Земли этого автора [Leschenaut, 1811]. Несмотря на хронологическую принадлежность заметки к миссионерско–колониальному периоду, имя ее автора не находится ни среди миссионеров, ни среди сотрудников колониальных администраций. И других сведений о нем или о ней нет. По–видимому, поэтому составители антологии работ о триадах предпочли просто умолчать о этом авторе в своем «Введении», начав историографический обзор непосредственно с У. Милна [Triad, 2000, p. x].
3 Имея в своем распоряжении электронные переводчики и словари, а также располагая значительно бóльшими сетевыми ресурсами и каталогами, в сравнении с составителями указанной антологии мы сейчас находимся в значительно лучшем положении, чтобы идентифицировать этого автора. Из опубликованной записи следует, что автор придерживался не масонской парадигмы, впервые предложенной У. Милном [XIV. Some account of a secret association in China, 1825, p. 11–12]. У. Милн и Р. Моррисон считали тайные общества китайцев аналогами масонских лож в Европе и предлагали соответствующие методы их изучения. Автор голландской заметки придерживался иной оценки тайных обществ как революционно–террористических организаций. В этой связи он ссылался на Террор (Schrikbewind) 1793–1794 гг. во Франции (Frankrijk) времен Великой Французской революции; сетовал, не передалась ли революция из Европы в Азию. Свои наблюдения он сделал на о. Ява в 1804 г. При этом сообщил, что в то время девять провинций Китая были охвачены восстанием, поднятым Союзом Неба и Земли (тянь ди хуй, Thian–Thée–Ohé, hemel–aarde–vereenigd) (ср. [Поршнева, 1972, c. 149]). Не менее важно, что автор был представлен участником плавания к Южным Землям (Zuid–Landen).
