Abstract

The article looks into some issues regarding the identification of ethno-confessional groups in the Syrian Arab Republic with a focus on the concepts (or terms) applied to them. Syrian Armenians are chosen as a case study, since they recognize themselves as Syrians and at the same time attach much importance to maintaining their Armenian identity.

The first section of the article deals with the concept of minority and the usage of the term in the academic literature and legal sources, since ethno-confessional groups are often studied through the prism of this concept. Usually, it implies not just the size of the group but its non-dominating political and legal status. This often brings about some negative connotations even in the cases of the “neutral” usage of the concept.

The second – studies the approach of the Syrian government and explains what factors define their terminology applied to ethno-confessional groups and how the concepts and terms used by the Syrian authorities reflect their policies towards ethno-confessional issues in Syria.

The third section is a case study of the Armenian community of Syria. It offers an account of concepts used by them which are compared to those used within the governmental approaches.

It is concluded that, on the one hand, the Syrian government is pursuing the idea of a common Syrian identity, which unites all the Syrians no matter their ethnic and confessional identity. On the other, despite that, on the local level ethno-confessional groups still identify themselves and other groups based on their ethno-confessional identity.

ВЫВОДЫ
1 События последних двух десятилетий на Ближнем Востоке, для которого характерно наличие большого числа этнических и религиозных (конфессиональных) общностей, актуализировали этноконфессиональную проблематику. Интерес к ней резко возрос как в академической и экспертной среде, так и в международно-политической. С одной стороны, этноконфессиональное многообразие в государствах региона стало рассматриваться как один из факторов конфликта, а с другой – внимание было обращено к проблеме положения этноконфессиональных групп (меньшинств) в условиях конфликтов и кризисов.
2 В исследованиях и аналитических работах рассмотрение этноконфессиональных групп в ближневосточных странах часто проводится через призму дихотомии «меньшинство – не меньшинство». Это неизбежно сводит всю сложность этноконфессиональной ситуации к крайне узкому, часто оценочному видению и не отражает реальной картины или резко контрастирует с тем, как эта проблема рассматривается изнутри в конкретных странах региона.

4 Учитывая специфику многосоставного сирийского общества, для которого наличие большого числа этноконфессиональных компонентов является чем-то естественным на протяжении многих веков, интересно посмотреть, как этноконфессиональная проблематика видится изнутри: официальными властями, с одной стороны, и отдельными этническими и (или) религиозными группами – с другой.
5 Для этого важно определить, какие понятия используются ими для обозначения этноконфессиональных групп, какой смысл вкладывается в эти понятия, как это отражает реальное отношение к этноконфессиональному вопросу в стране. С этой проблемой тесно связан и круг вопросов, касающихся проблем идентичности.
6 Особенности социально-политического развития Сирии, ее политической культуры, этноконфессионального состава повлияли на формирование и закрепление в структуре сирийского общества некой системы идентичностей, очень часто переплетающихся, накладывающихся и неотделимых друг от друга.
7 Наряду с объединяющей (хотя бы формально, рамочно) всех жителей Сирии идентичностью «сирийца» (жителя Сирийской Арабской Республики (САР)) существует еще множество идентичностей локального или же, наоборот, транснационального уровней. При этом принадлежность к определенной группе (или группам), объединенной общей идентичностью, и, что более важно, ощущение такой принадлежности является чем-то естественным и непременно необходимым в условиях сирийской реальности.
8 В качестве объекта исследования в настоящей статье рассматриваются сирийские армяне. Подобный выбор обусловлен тем, что, являясь гражданами Сирии и придавая сирийской идентичности большое значение, сирийские армяне одновременно продолжают прилагать серьезные усилия для сохранения армянской идентичности, которая, в свою очередь, имеет несколько уровней. При этом важно, что эти идентичности в основном не вступают в серьезные противоречия друг с другом, составляя как бы отдельные компоненты некой единой множественной идентичности.
