Colonial Kenya: socio-political forces and lines of contradiction

Abstract

The presented article is devoted to the study of the structure of society and the relationship of various ethnic and social groups in Kenya during the era of colonialism. There are four main centers of power - European colonists, missionaries, immigrants from South Asia and the local African population. The main lines of contradictions between them are traced, common interests and conflict zones are outlined in the conditions of the dominant importance of the metropolis, which plays the role of an arbitrator. Particular attention is paid to the channels of arrival in Kenya, the dynamics of growth in the number and socio-political weight of Europeans and Indians, their main claims against each other, resources of influence, methods of achieving goals and defending their positions are analyzed. With the unconditional political domination of immigrants from Europe, the British authorities were forced to recognize the huge contribution of Indian capital to the development of the local economy, to attract Africans to serve in law enforcement and the armed forces, and rely on local resources to cover the needs of the colony during the years of economic crises and World War II. The rise of Indian nationalism contributed to the strengthening of anti-colonial sentiments in Kenya and the consolidation of part of the African and South Asian elite in the simpler struggle for independence. Missionary organizations made a significant contribution to the spread of education and medicine among the indigenous people, gave impetus to the development of their own Christian churches in the region, but undermined the confidence of Africans in themselves, taking an irreconcilable position in relation to some local customs and traditions. Colonial Kenyan society was highly segregated, although the apartheid regime did not officially exist there. In the early years of Kenya's independence, the frictions and contradictions that had been smoothed out earlier by London made themselves felt with renewed vigor, which provoked the emigration of people of Indian and European descent from the country.

1 ВВЕДЕНИЕ
2 История колониальной Кении ограничивается периодом с последней четверти XIX в., когда в Восточной Африке были разделены сферы влияния между Великобританией и Германией, до получения независимости в 1963 г. Имперская британская восточноафриканская компания, созданная в 1888 г., оказалась не способна контролировать положение дел на вверенной Короной территории и была упразднена в 1894 г. После этого с 1895 г. по 1920 г. Кения входила в состав Восточно-Африканского протектората Британской империи со столицей в Найроби. В статусе собственно колонии страна находилась с 1920 г., в том же году она получила свое современное название.
3 Одним из инструментов политики Соединенного Королевства в Кении было привлечение в колонию приезжих, прежде всего, европейских поселенцев (из метрополии и других колоний), миссионеров, выходцев из Южной Азии, Британской Индии и Южной Африки. Уже к 1926 г. в Кении проживало 15 тыс. европейцев, 30 тыс. индийцев и около 2,6 млн коренных жителей, а в 1950 г. – 30 тыс., 135 тыс. и 5,2 млн, соответственно [Wolf, 1973, p. 401]. В 1952 г. население Кении, Уганды и Танганьики оценивалось приблизительно в 20 млн человек, из которых 76 тыс. происходили из Европы, 254,8 тыс. – из Южной Азии, 58,5 тыс. имели какие-либо иные корни, а остальные (19,1 млн) относились к местному африканскому населению [Himbara, 1997, p. 11]. Данные о численности африканцев желательно воспринимать с существенными допущениями (из-за сложности подсчета на местах). Цифры, относящиеся к остальным группам населения, можно считать вполне достоверными. При этом в Кении всегда абсолютно доминировало местное население, доля европейцев никогда не превышала 1%, а выходцев из Южной Азии – 3%.
4 В результате данной миграции структура общества в колонии стала весьма разнообразна, зародились и оформились местные политические силы, со своими интересами и претензиями друг к другу и к властям. Между этническими группами сформировались весьма непростые взаимоотношения, отягощенные, в том числе, необходимостью учитывать фактор влияния метрополии в этом регионе.

6 Самой организованной и значимой силой в регионе были европейские поселенцы. Они претендовали на реальную политическую власть, принимали участие в управлении и протекторатом, и в последствии колонией. Они участвовали в работе местных органов власти - Законодательном и Исполнительном Советах (созданы в 1906 г.). Принятие курса на привлечение колонистов в Кению связано с приходом на пост комиссара протектората Чарльза Элиота в 1901 г. В 1902 г. в Найроби выходцы из Европы создали первую общественную организацию – «Ассоциацию колонистов» («Colonist’s Association»). Почти сразу с началом миграции произошло разделение потока приезжих на две основные группы.
7 Первая группа была незначительной по численности и состояла преимущественно из европейских аристократов. У них было достаточно денег и влияния, чтобы приобретать огромные земельные владения, вести беззаботную жизнь, занимаясь хозяйством и развитием экономики по желанию, а не по необходимости [Izuakor, 1987, p. 404]. Типичным представителем данной прослойки был экстравагантный лорд Деламер, охотник, животновод-селекционер, один из лидеров колонистов. К 1920-м гг. на основе данной группы в Кении возникла так называемая «Счастливая долина» («Happy Valley»). Это объединение поселений европейских аристократов в районах Ньери и Найваши, существовавшее в 1920-1940-х гг. Его жители прославились ведением декадентского образа жизни, скандалами на фоне информации об употреблении наркотических средств и сексуальной распущенности.
