Abstract

The article is devoted to the issues of clarifying the Chronology of official Christianization of Caucasian Albania, which took place in the beginning of 4th century AD. The study of the information from the “Life of Gregory” (a variant of Agathangelos’ “History”), “Letter of Giut to Saint Vachē”, “Tale of Vachagan”, “History of Albania” by Movses Daskhurançi and other Armenian sources suggest that Christianity in the Albanian kingdom was officially adopted in 313 or 315 years. The king of the country then was the founder of the Arsacid dynasty of Albania Vachagan I the Brave (but not his grandson Urnayr), and the king of Armenia was Tiridat III the Great, also Arsacid. As M.-L. Chaumont established in 1969, the latter, with the help of Gregory the Illuminator, adopted the Christian faith at the state level in June 311, two months after the publication of the Edict of Sardica “On Tolerance” by Emperor Galerius <em >(293–311). In 313, after the appearance of the Edict of Milan, Tiridat attracted the younger allies of Armenia Iberia-Kartli, Albania-Aluank' and Lazika-Egerk' (Colchis) to the process of Christianization. In the first half of 315, Gregory the Illuminator baptized the Albanian king (who had arrived in Armenia) and ordained the first bishop Tovmas (the founder of the Albanian church, with the center in the capital Kapalak) for his country: he was from the city of Satala in Lesser Armenia. Probably, at the same stage, Christianization covered the whole of antique Albania, i.e. territory north of the Kura River, to the Caspian Sea and the Derbend Pass.

Ранее мной была аргументирована дата официального принятия христианства в Албанском царстве 315 годом [Акопян, 1987, c. 126], и эта версия была принята многими исследователями [Кананчев, 2001, с. 41–46; Мамедова, 2005, с. 536–5372; Айвазян, 2015, с. 26]. 2 Согласно средневековым армянским источникам, в Албанском царстве христианство в качестве официальной религии было принято в начале IV в. в годы царствования в Армении Трдата (Тиридата) III Великого (298–330). Так, «национальный» или «армянский» вариант «Истории Армении» Агатангелоса (Агафангела), который считается составленным во второй половине V в., сообщает, что просветитель Армении Григорий (Григор), сын парфянского вельможи Анака, с помощью царя Трдата распространил христианство по всей стране и до пределов Кавказского хребта: «...простирал [Григор] проповедь Евангелия: от города саталийцев до края Халтик', до Кларджк'а, до самых [северных] пределов [страны] маскутов, до врат Аланских и до врат Каспийских»3. Под «вратами», несомненно, выступают Дарьяльский и Дербентский проходы, следовательно, в указанные автором пределы распространения новой религии входили как территория Албанского царства IV в., так и расположенного к востоку от него (от устья Куры до Дербента) царства Маскутов (Баласакан). 3. 3 О принятии христианства в Албании и соседних странах более подробно рассказывает другой вариант сочинения Агатангелоса, который в научной литературе именуется «Житием Григория». Его несохранившийся армянский оригинал был составлен, по мнению издателя греческого текста Ж. Гаритта, раньше так называемого национального Агатангелоса, в первой половине V в. В настоящее время «Житие» известно в переводах на греческий [Garitte, 1946]4, арабский [Марр, 1906; Жамкочян, 2016]5, каршуни (арабо-сирийский) и сирийский [Van Esbroeck, 1971, Pр. 139–221; 1977, Pр. 291–358]6. Его текст содержит важные подробности, не попавшие в «армянский» Агатангелос, в том числе и уникальные сведения об Албании, Иверии и Лазике. 4. 4 По рассказу версий «Жития Григория», решаемые в царстве Великой Армении особой значимости государственные дела нередко касались также и трех соседних царств – Албанского, Иверского и Лазского7. При перечислении участников важнейших событий цари этих стран упоминаются (хотя и без использования имен) сразу после армянского царя Тиридата (Трдата III) и перед армянскими князьями-нахарарами. Так, примкнув к христианской вере, которую проповедовал освобожденный из заточения Григорий Просветитель, царь Тиридат собирает у себя всех армянских князей и посылает приглашения царям Албании, Иверии и Лазики, которые прибывают к нему [Марр, 1906, с. 114–115; Garitte, 1946, § 92, 98, р. 70–72; Жамкочян, 2016, с. 163–164]. Вместе с этими царями он отправляет Григория с большой свитой (16 влиятельных князей во главе со спарапетом Артаваздом Мамиконяном, с 3 тыс. всадников) в Каппадокийскую Кесарию (центр восточных провинций Римской империи) и вместе с ними же встречает его по возвращении в царской летней резиденции Багаван (в верховьях Арацани, совр. р. Мурад) [Марр, 1906, с. 132–133; Garitte, 1946, § 159, р. 97; Жамкочян, 2016, с. 181]8. В Кесарии в сентябре 314 г. Григорий торжественно получает сан архиерея-епископа Армении на епископском соборе во главе с архиепископом Леонтием Кесарийским (собор, видимо, состоялся 14 сентября в церковный праздник Поминовения всех мучеников, как этого требовали «Апостольские каноны»). Имена участвовавших в соборе 20 епископов (по «Житию») сохранила только «Армянская книга канонов» в конце списка участников Никейского собора 325 г. в небольшой вставке под заглавием «И те, кто собрались в Кесарии» [Армянская книга канонов, 1964, с. 150]. 7. В арабской версии соответственно указаны Аланское (ошибочно), Грузинское и Абхазское царства.
