From the royal wet nurse (dāī) to the native nanny (āyā)

Abstract

The article highlights the role of female servants in pre-colonial and colonial India. The most significant transformation was experienced by wet nurses who for centuries were a privileged trade group among different categories of female servants.Maternal breastfeeding was not advocated healthful for mother, so wet nursing was supported as a reasonable alternative. The wet nursing practice indeed flourished in times and places of sharp class distinctions. In some lands there were customary or ritual methods of sequential feeding for future rulers whilst in others the wet nurses of the kings such as the Great Mughal might be consecrated. Milk interpreted as a different form of the mother's blood, was seen the transmission not only nourishment but also central traits of character. This had consequences for the choice of wet nurse. This type of ‘wet nursing’ indeed had an important function in strengthening kin ties. With the growth of the British presence, the role of wet nurse did change dramatically: she lost her high social status and privileges, moving into the category of ordinary domestic servants, often being an object of cruel exploitation.From the beginning of the nineteenth century onwards, British memsahibs, the wives of officials, military officers, and merchants, consistently expounded an image of Indians nurses to the female reading public in Britain through their letters and diaries. The servants’ dark skin and their religious, social, and linguistic differences contributed to the negative attitudes of the memsahibs towards them. The Indian rebellion of 1857 and the emergence of social Darwinism further heightened memsahibs’ beliefs that Indians were subhuman savages. Furthermore, by writing about their Indian servants, memsahibs identified themselves as active participants in Britain’s imperial venture in India.

В мусульманских государствах, в том числе и в Индии эпохи Великих Моголов, кормилицы обладали высоким социальным статусом, что во многом объяснялось историческим прецедентом – тем глубоким уважением, которое питал пророк Мухаммед к своей кормилице Халиме бинт Абу Зуайб. Она вскармливала Мухаммеда с возраста восьми дней до четырех лет. Согласно хадису, в связи с засухой и голодом Халима не могла прокормить даже собственного ребенка, но после того, как она взяла в дом Мухаммеда, у нее в груди появилось столько молока, что хватило и молочному, и родному сыновьям [The Oxford Dictionary of Islam, 2018]. После начала пророческой миссии Мухаммеда Халима и ее муж приняли ислам. Согласно другому хадису, когда Халима пришла к пророку, он, испытывая к ней почтение и привязанность, снял с себя плащ и постелил его перед ней на землю, чтобы она села [Haykal, 1968, p. 47].
2 В эпоху Великих Моголов кормилицами (dāī) становились женщины благородного происхождения, в частности жены военных и дворцовых служителей. В шахских гаремах, где роды были важнейшим и частым событием, кормилицы и повитухи играли решающую роль. Только они могли засвидетельствовать первенство и порядок рождения того или иного отпрыска падишаха. Неудивительно, что кормилицы обладали влиянием при дворе и большими личными состояниями, которые они частично тратили на благотворительность, в том числе на строительство мечетей и медресе. В свою очередь, правители возводили любимым кормилицам роскошные гробницы.
3 Кормилицы-dāī делились на четыре категории: 1) повитуха, dāījanāī; 2) кормилица, dāī-dūdh-pilāī, или Annā; 3) нянька при ребенке, вышедшем из грудного возраста, dāī-khilāī, или chochhā; 4) нянька при девушке или молодой женщине, dāī-asīl, или Māmā. Чаще всего категории плавно перетекали друг в друга: когда ребенок подрастал, его кормилица становилась нянькой и т.д. Шахская кормилица носила титул angah, т.е. приемная мать (главная из кормилиц называлась maham angah). Муж шахской кормилицы имел титул atgah, т.е. приемный отец. Ее сын, т.е. молочный брат правителя или принца крови (шахзаде), именовался kokah, kokaltash – весьма распространенная часть почетного титула – мансаба у могольских военачальников. Пока будущему падишаху или принцу не исполнилось 2.5–3 года, к его кормилице относились как к его второй матери, т.е. со всеми почестями, которые предполагал придворный этикет [Shivram, 2013, p. 542].
4 В могольскую эпоху, как, впрочем, и в предшествующий период Делийского султаната, кровное родство (nasab) ни в коей мере не было гарантией политической лояльности. Между единокровными братьями, многочисленными отпрысками падишахов от разных жен, шла постоянная борьба за власть, подчас принимавшая характер открытой междоусобицы. В этой борьбе участвовали и женщины – матери и сестры враждующих принцев, которые поддерживали своих сыновей/братьев, ведя сложные дворцовые интриги и вступая в политические альянсы. Напротив, молочное родство всегда гарантировало претенденту на трон верность и поддержку целого клана родственников. Благосостояние и социальный статус самой кормилицы и всей ее родни зависели от возвышения ее молочного сына. Близкие родственники молочной матери становились близкими родственниками (mahram) вскормленному ее молоком ребенку. Они часто получали должности при дворе или служили в армии, формируя семейные группы, на которые опиралась власть.
