Historians of Chemistry at the Institute for the History of Science and Technology of the USSR (Russian) Academy of Sciences and Elsewhere: An Interdisciplinary Aspect

AbstractThe survival of small professional communities lacking a mechanism for preserving their human potential is an issue for modern Russian science. This article examines the content of interdisciplinary studies in the history of chemistry, conducted by Russian scientists, with a particular emphasis on the works of researchers at the Institute for the History of Science and Technology of the USSR (Russian) Academy of Sciences, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. A methodological approach that determines the hierarchy of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary studies is proposed for better understanding the processes of professionalization and socialization of historians of chemistry. An attempt is made to reconstruct the trajectories of the scientists’ professional mobility in the sociocultural and cognitiveinstitutionalization coordinates of the problem field of the history of chemistry. The concrete examples of professional mobility of the historians of chemistry show how the researchers’ interests shifted towards the social, methodological, and culturological problems in science as well as towards science studies. Sometimes this transition resulted not only in a change in a researcher’s focus area but also in a complete departure from historico-chemical studies. The article concludes with an outline of the prospects for interdisciplinary research, necessary for the preservation and development of the Russian professional community of historians of chemistry.
