1 Монография, о которой здесь пойдет речь, производит крайне неоднозначное впечатление. Барбара Боэн – весьма опытный классический археолог из США, ее первые изданные статьи относятся еще к 1970-м годам. Тогда же она начала принимать участие в работах афинского отделения Германского археологического института на Керамике. Это сотрудничество растянулось на десятилетия; в частности, Боэн полностью подготовила один из томов продолжающегося издания Kerameikos, посвященный пиксидам геометрического стиля из данного квартала Афин1. 1. 2 Говоря во вводных разделах рецензируемой книги об истории ее создания, автор неоднократно подчеркивает (с. X, XIII, 1), что первоначальным замыслом было издание о кратерах тома такого же характера, как и о пиксидах, т.е. публикация памятников с их хронологическим и типологическим анализом, работа сугубо специальная. Однако затем планы изменились, поскольку «изучение кратера поставило так много вопросов социально-политического контекста применительно как к бронзовому, так и к железному веку, что объем публикации расширился до ее нынешних размеров» (с. X). Дело, впрочем, даже не в объеме (монография, в сущности, не так уж и велика), а в том, что исследование превратилось из чисто археологического в историческое. Эволюция подхода Б. Боэн выразилась, в частности, и в том, что по ходу создания труда его название менялось с «Кратер» на «Кратер и kratos» и, наконец, на «Kratos и кратер» (с. 1). Перед нами, разумеется, сознательная попытка игры слов и смыслов, хотя в действительности κρατήρ (от κεράννυμι, ‘смешивать’2) не имеет никакого этимологического родства с κράτος, ‘власть’, налицо чисто случайное созвучие. Тем не менее здесь мы имеем дело с заявкой на то, чтобы трактовать кратер как феномен, имеющий отношение к политической власти. 2. Странно, что Б. Боэн сомневается в этой деривации (с. 17), которая является совершенно неоспоримой.
3 Соответственно, исследовательницу данные артефакты интересуют в качестве атрибутов не столько симпосия3, сколько заупокойной обрядности. Крупные монументальные кратеры, как известно, не помещались в ранних Афинах в могилы как часть погребального инвентаря, а ставились сверху, играя роль надгробий. В результате они подвергались воздействию стихий, что препятствовало их хорошей сохранности, и, как отмечает Боэн, с кратерами ей было работать значительно труднее, нежели с пиксидами, ввиду гораздо большей фрагментированности имеющегося материала (с. XIII). 3. 4 Но при чем же здесь все-таки власть? Автор книги решительно придерживается мнения, согласно которому кратер на могиле – безусловный признак захоронения лица весьма высокого политического статуса, представителя правящей элиты (потому-то он и является властным символом). В наибольшей же степени надгробные кратеры соотносятся с царями (вернее, с пожизненными архонтами, что является более точным определением для XI–VIII вв. до н.э.).
