Abstract

The paper deals with insufficiently known issues concerning pairs of speech acts in dialogue structure. The analysis is based on both Russian literary language and Russian colloquial speech. The question (both its meaning and form) in the question-and-answer pair is so much linked with the answer, that it can't be treated as a separate speech act, but as a part of a complex speech act. This implies that besides the simple speech acts (such as statement, promise, threat) complex speech acts may be identified. We suggest using the term duplex speech acts for the case. This term is close to the discourse term  adjacency pair. The paper focuses mainly on the two types of duplex speech acts:  question-and-answer and incentive-and-answer. Their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features are described, as well as their place in speech аct system and their connection to the system of speech and literary genres of the Russian language. The method of the study is not only plain text analysis but also linguistic experiment and language game study. One of the sections of the paper deals with following irregular duplex speech acts: (1) speech acts with examining questions; (2) non-substantive answers; (3) speech acts with oblique answers. Final section of the paper contains short description of situations with a duplex speech act followed by other utterances, that are semantically  attached.
