Not Such a Simple Picture. About Wisława Szymborska

The article focuses on the key points of the worldview and poetics of great Polish poet of the 20th and 21st centuries, Nobel Prize laureate (1996) Wisława Szymborska (1923–2012). The author considers the role of surprise, doubt and humility as emotional states, attitudes and structure-forming elements in Szymborska's poetic texts. The article analyzes the connection of Szymborska's poetry to the daily life – without nudity, the specificity and methods of construction of the lyrical subject and the lyrical recipient, such as ironic distance, mechanisms of combination of micro- and macro perspective, multiplication and shift of perspective; the significance of detail and close-up, the tendency to paradox, paraphrasing of idioms, quotations, using the rhetorical figures of repetition and negation; ways and aims of overcoming anthropocentrism; the drama of one-sided communication of man and nature; declaration of the position of responsibility and empathy; apology of poetic imagination.
