Russian folk demonology and its regional features. Part I. The spirits of nature and house locuses. The personification of death and diseases

The article is a shorter version of a chapter from the future collective monograph that provides the comparative analysis of Slavic lower mythology. This chapter is focused on Russian demonological beliefs. There are two parts: 1. “The spirits of nature and house loci. The personification of the death and the disease”; 2. “Beliefs in devil. The demonologisation of the dead. People with supernatural power”. The first part gives an outlook of the spirits of nature loci (wood goblin, water spirit, mermaid, etc.) and house loci (Brownie, bannik, etc.). It also reveals the popular perception of the death and of some diseases. The second part addresses to the beliefs in devil, in the dead people who return from the land of the dead, or in the people with supernatural power (witches, warlocks). The article is aimed at giving a systematic description of the most popular Russian lower mythology characters and at revealing their regional features.
