Abstract

Scholars and various commentators most often view Slobodan Milošević and his Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as either heralds of Greater Serbian nationalist ideology or guardians of the multiethnic socialist Yugoslavism. However, it is more correct and heuristic to assess Milošević as an architect of a hybrid Post-Communist regime. The politician came to power and remained at its peak for many years through virtuous maneuvering between influential groups of communists and anti-Communists, who held different views on the «Serbian national question». To accomplish this, he used hybrid ideologies and political mythologies, and masterminded internally inconsistent political programs. This strategy of persuasion allowed him to build complex and eclectic architectures of his social support.
