On the Origin of the Term Krilatye Slova (Winged Words) in Russian

Abstract

This article studies the idiom krilatye slova (pithy sayings, literally: winged words), which is to considered to be created by Homer. Homer used the phrase ἔπεα πτερόεντα in “Iliad” and "Odyssey" 104 times. The study made it clear that in the Russian literature the phrase appeared in 1760 thanks to Vasily Trediakovsky's translation of “The Life of Francis Bacon”. However, in the 18th century, the phrase didn’t become a part of the vocabulary of the Russian language. The phrase krilatye slova started being used actively only 100 years later thanks to the German scientist G. Büchmann, the author of the dictionary “Geflügelte Wrote”. The German dictionary became a precedent for Russian idiom collectors. In 1896 they published a dictionary “Winged words”  by S. Maximov and in 1896 a dictionary “Winged and apt words” by M. Mikhelson. However, among Russian scientists, there is no common understanding what specific features winged words should have and what elements of language they are. In Homer's times, a phrase could only be considered a ‘winged word’ if it belonged to a person who was directly or indirectly related to the royal family. The words were equated to the deed and had the physical force of impact. The goddess Ossa, or Fama, was the embodiment of the winged word among the Greeks. According to Ovid, unfaithful talk, and chatter fill human ears, produce only untruth, delusion, futility, fear, discord, and grumbling. The Russian writer Trediakovsky called Aristotle's philosophical reasoning winged words, he considered them abstract and dead. Thus, the phrase winged words turned out to be in demand by Russian culture and science only in the second half of the 19th century because there came an era of conscious aesthetic play with preceding text.

1 Современные лексикологи выделяют крылатологию как раздел науки о языке, изучающий особый разряд фразеологических единиц – крылатые слова (далее – КС). КС заняли «прочное место в языке, став одним из маркеров современного культурного контекста» [Ломакина, Мокиенко 2019: 256‒257].
2 В лингвистике в определение КС традиционно включаются следующие признаки: 1) устойчивость, воспроизводимость; 2) афористичность, образность, экспрессивность, эмоциональность; 3) общеизвестность источника происхождения, т. н. цитатная модальность (фольклорный, литературный, публицистический, научный, из речи исторических деятелей); 4) узуальное распространение [Бабкин 1970; Бельчиков 1990; Гудков 1999, 2020, Душенко 2007, Шишкина, Финкельштейн 1972; Шулежкова 1995 и др.]. О. В. Ломакина и В. М. Мокиенко сводят суть данного разряда языковых единиц к «главной характеристике ‒ прямой зависимости от источника, их воспроизводимости и узнаваемости в готовом виде» [Ломакина, Мокиенко 2019: 256‒257]. Однако, несмотря на существование множества терминов-вариантов, до настоящего времени квалификационные признаки КС являются дискуссионными, отсутствует общепринятое определение КС, специальные диахронные исследования генезиса и эволюции КС в русской лексикологии не проводились.
3 Выражение КС считается заимствованным из поэтического языка Гомера. Начало его функционирования в качестве термина связывают с именем немецкого ученого Г. Бюхмана в связи с выходом в свет в 1864 г. словаря «Крылатые слова» [Büchmann 1864]. Само выражение в немецком языке появилось благодаря поэту И. Г. Фоссу – переводчику «Илиады» (1793). Г. Бюхман счел находку Фосса продуктивной и предложил называть данным термином все виды крылатых единиц – словосочетания и выражения, которые вошли в речь из известного источника и закрепились в языке.
4 В русском языке термин стал применяться после выхода в 1890 г. книги С. В. Максимова «Крылатые слова». Автор в предисловии определяет КС как «принятые с чужих слов на веру, до такой степени общеизвестные, что во всякое время охотно пускаешь их на ветер» [Максимов 1890: 1]. М. И. Михельсон определял КС как «слова, вылетающие из уст говорящего» [Михельсон 1896: 174], отмечал их оригинальность, красоту формы, убедительность, многовековую авторитетность, принятие обществом [Михельсон 1896: I]. Со второй половины XIX в. в лингвистической науке стало складываться новое направление, занимающееся сбором, классификацией и фиксацией устойчивых выражений, основоположником которого можно считать Г. Бюхмана.
5 Однако новая традиция, ссылаясь на авторитет Гомера, все-таки не учитывала старую культурную традицию. Г. Бюхман перевел на немецкий древнегреческую фразу ἔπεα πτερόεντα (лат. epea pteroenta) – geflügelte Worte. С. В. Максимов ввел в отечественный научный оборот кальку с кальки – крылатые слова. Новая традиция была создана искусственно, механически, что привело к известным противоречиям в трактовке термина.
