Variants of Pronunciation of Vowels in the 1st Pre-stressed Syllable After Hard Sibilants and ц in Place of the Letters о and а

The article examines one of the sections of the Russian orthoepic system that has undergone a major change over the past hundred years – the pronunciation of vowel letters o and а in the 1st pre-stressed syllable after [ш, ж, ц]. The position under consideration was initially contradictory: the consonants [ш, ж, ц] were previously soft, then they hardened, but the vowels after them continued to behave as if they were positioned after the soft ones. In the first third of the twentieth century, the norm was established, according to which in the vast majority of cases, in the position of the 1st pre-stressed syllable after [ш, ж, ц], in accordance with the stressed [o] – [ы^э] is pronounced, and in accordance with the stressed [a] – [а^ә]. However, in the modern norm there are a few deviations from this rule. The results of the experimental study largely contradict the lexicographic recommendations. In the words with o, this letter can be pronounced as [ы^э], [э], [а^ә], [о], but their distribution differs for specific words and is determined by a set of different factors: 1) the presence of conditions for inter-syllabic assimilation of vowels (жокей, шоссе), 2) the unstressed sound [o] allows you to either emphasize the "alienness" of the borrowed word (креп-жоржет, шокировать), or the infrequency of the vocabulary (жонкиль, шортгорн), or highlight the word in a strong prosodic position. In the words with a, this letter could be pronounced [ы^э] и [а^ә] are fixed. At the same time, it can be stated that most words with the norm under consideration have already "survived" the stage of orthoepic variation and are pronounced as a general rule with the sound [а^ә] (жара, шаги, цари), and in other words, the ratio of variants inherent in the previous orthoepic section has been ‘preserved’. There is no evidence at the moment that the process of replacing the variant [ы^э] with the variant [а^ә] in these words continues.

1	1. История появления вариантов произношения гласных в 1-м предударном слоге после [ш, ж, ц]
2	В конце XIX – начале XX века в соответствии с ударными гласными [а, о, э] в первом предударном слоге, то есть в слоге непосредственно предшествующем ударному, после твердых звуков [ш, ж, ц] по действующей в то время произносительной норме реализовались звуком [э^ы] – звуком средним между [э] и [ы], но ближе к [э]. Это соответствовало действующей в то время экающей норме, согласно которой ударные звуки [э], [о], [а] совпадали, не различались в рассматриваемой позиции в одном и том же безударном гласном [э^ы]: ш[э]ст (шест) – ш[э^ы]сты́ (шесты), ж[о́]ны (жёны) – ж[э^ы]на́ (жена), ш[а]г (шаг) – ш[э^ы]га́ть (шагать). «Позиция после [ж, ш, ц] была внутренне противоречивой: согласные [ж, ш, ц] – твердые, но гласные “вели себя” после них не так, как после твердых согласных, а так, как после парных мягких. (В этом сказывалась былая мягкость всех шипящих и ц.)» [Касаткин 1989: 47].
3	Известно, что в первой трети ХХ века произошло серьезное изменение системы русских гласных – на смену экающему произношению пришло и́кающее, при котором в безударных слогах после мягких согласных вместо предударного [э^и] стали произносить [и^э], то есть звук средний между [и] и [э], но ближе к [и] – ст[и^э]на́ (стена), в[и^э]сна́ (весна), ч[и^э]сы́ (часы). По аналогии с позицией после мягких изменилось и произношение после твердых, после [ж, ш, ц] звук [э^ы] закономерно заменился на звук [ы^э]: ш[ы^э]сты́ (шесты), ж[ы^э]на́ (жена), ц[ы^э]на́ (цена).
4	Можно было бы ожидать подобной замены в рассматриваемой безударной позиции и на месте ударного [а], то есть по общему правилу ш[э^ы]га́ть, ж[э^ы]ра́, ц[э^ы]ри́ (шагать, жара, цари) должно было замениться на ш[ы^э]га́ть, ж[ы^э]ра́, ц[ы^э]ри́ (шагать, жара, цари). Но этого не произошло: звуки на месте ударного [а] в этой позиции совпали с реализацией этой нормы в позиции после парных твердых, стали произносить ш[а^ә]га́ть, ш[а^ә]ги́ (шагать, шаги) – так же, как д[а^ә]ва́ть, тр[а^ә]ва́ (давать, трава) и т. д. При существовании двух сильных тенденций развития – стремления к упрощению системы гласных и стремления к равновесности системы, к действию общего правила, «подстройкой» исключений под единую закономерность – язык выбрал в данном случае второе направление, что, как полагают, могло произойти под воздействием письма. 5	Итак, в подавляющем большинстве случаев в позиции 1-го предударного слога после [ж, ш, ц] в соответствии с ударными [э] и [о] произносится [ы^э], а в соответствии с ударным [а] – [а^ә] (ср. ш[ы^э]сты́ (шесты), ж[ы^э]лто́к (желток), но ж[а^ә]ра́ (жара), ц[а^ә]ри́ (цари)).
6	Казалось бы, реализация этой нормы не должна вызывать затруднения у говорящих, чередование ударных и безударных звуков выглядит вполне закономерным. Но в современной произносительной норме есть немногочисленные отступления от этого позиционного правила, требующие отдельного рассмотрения для формулирования кодификационных рекомендаций. Для достижения этой цели был проведен эксперимент, в ходе которого 100 дикторов, носителей «младшей» произносительной литературной нормы начитали специально составленные фразы достаточно большой длины, в которые были включены слова, анализ произношения которых представлен ниже.
