The characteristic of discourse approach is given, the current directions of research connected with various aspects of discourse organization and its functioning in society are reviewed. It is shown that trends in the development of this science area will be determined in many ways: by the influence of growing attention to the diversity of contexts and communicative situations, by the consideration of the psychological characteristics of communication partners, by the interest in the process of interaction and discourse effects, and also by the impact of globalization and technological changes. The development of researches on discourse types that appear because of new information technologies (SMS discourse, post-event discourse in the Internet, etc.) is projected. Personological and ethnopsycholinguistic studies on the discursive indicators of personal characteristics, ethnocultural specificity of discourse and intercultural understanding are likely to be elaborated. Discursive abilities are claimed to be equally important subject in communication studies. At the same time, the growing role of communication brings to the forefront issues of conversational strategies, tactics, and their definitions that as a whole might determine the prospects for studying interactions (live/online) in different spheres of life and optimization of conversation management. Various approaches to studying discourse effects and conceptualization of worldview in discourse are considered to be promising and practically relevant as well as research on how improve a foreign language and discursive skills. The future results might help to provide for both human-computer interaction and information-psychological security. The integrating role of cognitive studies on discourse, which brings psycholinguistics closer to neurosciences, is emphasized.
