Abstract

Arthur Ashkin (USA), Gerard Mourou (France), and Donna Strickland (Canada) became Nobel Prize winners in physics this year. The decision of the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy of Sciences notes that their discoveries made a revolution in laser physics and “today extremely small objects and incredibly fast processes are now been seen in a new light”. A.Ashkin invented laser tweezers, with which you can manipulate particles, living cells, and even atoms with a laser beam. J.Mourou and D.Strikland solved a problem that had long been considered unsolvable: together they found a way to multiply the laser pulse by its stretching and compressing. The practical results of this discovery are used in ophthalmology, metalworking, and basic research.
