Service Instructions of the Moscow Military Censorship Commission (1914—1916)

The article deals with the organization and activity of the Moscow Military-Censorship Commission in 1914—1916. The author is analyzing the main goals of the establishment of the Commission and its objectives in the years of World War I. Based on archival documents, he reveals the structure of the Commission, particularities of its organization, problems in relations with printed media, with the Supreme Commander-in-Chief General Headquarters and with the government, as well as the difficulties of general censorial work. He also provides the full texts of three previously unpublished job instructions for military censors of the Moscow Military-Censorship Commission for the period from 1914 to 1916. It is shown how the direction and nature of military censorship changed depending on the situation on the fronts and the political situation in pre-revolutionary Russia.
