Abstract

The epoch-making discovery of the phenomenon of non-linear organization of the ancient Chinese text by the Leningrad sinologist-philosopher V.S. Spirin (1929–2002) radically expanded the horizons of our perception of the written heritage of ancient China. However, the continuation and development of the revolutionary Spirin undertaking turned out to be a very difficult task. As a result, under the rants about the continuation and development of the Spirin project, the irrationalism in the form of numerical mysticism (the so-called "Chinese numerology"), which V.S. Spirin confronted, was declared the Chinese form of rationality (methodology, a functional analogue of logic, etc.). The Spirin initiative nevertheless received a genuine continuation, in particular, it became an essential part of the in-depth textual research of the «Dao de jing», which begun in the early 70s. The thesis developed by one of the participants in this research program is that the phenomenon of non-linearity of the Chinese text goes back to "Yi jing", which is centered and organized by hexagram diagrammatism. Since the hexagrams of “Yi jing” should be regarded as the Chinese system of categories that determines the thinking of traditional China, the hexagram thinking pervades all forms of discourse, corresponding to a categorical vision.
