Abstract

The article examines the complex problems of relations between Japan and South Korea, which have their roots in the colonial rule of Japan on the Korean Peninsula. Among them a territorial dispute over a group of small islands in the Sea of Japan, the issue of Korean "comfort women", claims by Seoul to rename the Sea of Japan to the East Sea, a demand for compensation for Koreans who were mobilized for hard work in Japanese companies during the war, and others. It is concluded that the growing tension in relations between Japan and South Korea weakens the military-political triangle Japan— US— South Korea. That may lead to a change in the balance of power in Northeast Asia.
