Abstract

The article analyzes the stages of development of the American two-party system since the presidency of George Washington, while the main focus is on bipartisanship in the 1960s-2010s. Previously, the author focused on the internal political foundations of this stage, but in this article, along with other factors, seeks to reveal the important role of foreign policy reasons in this process. The 1960s became a decade of anti-colonial revolutions in Africa and the USSR's success in spreading its influence in the Third World. America responded to the challenges of the USSR and the Third World. In the United States itself, there was a surge of left-wing radicalism. White youth, involved in the new left movement and creating a counterculture, and the mass movement of blacks demanded the destruction of internal colonialism and a radical renewal of the American society. Immigration was dominated by immigrants from non-European countries. Multiculturalism was born. Unlike the Republicans, the Democratic Party tried to neutralize independent political action through reforms and made attempts to incorporate new movements into its social base. Republicans followed the defense of white supremacy and traditional values, while Democrats were committed to multiculturalism. The conflict between the two parties reached its peak during the presidency of the Republican D. Trump.
