Abstract

The "Society of Lovers of Ancient Writing Literature" was founded in Saint Petersburg in 1877 by Prince Pavel Petrovich Vyazemsky, a well-known literary historian and bibliographer, during the reform era of Emperor Alexander II. Being under the patronage of the Sovereign, in 1882 the Society received the status of an "Imperial Society". In 1888, Count Sergei Dmitrievich Sheremetev, a philanthropist and patron of the arts, became Chairman of the Society. The article analyses documents from the "Embassy in Constantinople" Foundation of the Archive of the Foreign Policy of Imperial Russia, dedicated to the organization of the only, and therefore unique musical and archaeographic expedition to Mount Athos, Serbia, and Bulgaria, carried out in 1906 on behalf of the "Society of Lovers of Ancient Literature" under the leadership of S. V. Smolensky and A.V. Preobrazhensky. The purpose of the expedition was to identify, study, and photocopy original and rare samples of old Slavic and Greek manuscripts containing the oldest Byzantine neumatic notation, or the Paleo-Byzantine type of notation, for comparative studies with old Russian chants. The documents reveal the role of state structures and that of the diplomatic support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Empire (the Asian Department) in the successful implementation of the scientific tasks set by the expedition, complementing the modern research of historians, philologists, musicologists, and representatives of the Church dedicated to the history of the "Society of Lovers of Ancient Literature" as a whole. They are first introduced by the author into scholarly circulation and show that the expedition was not only a success, but also marked the beginning of the development of a new scientific direction associated with the growing interest of researchers in the notated manuscripts, which up to this point had been little studied.
