Abstract

The article presents archival documents, which allow to shed new light on the history of Soviet historical science during the war, on the functioning of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, as well as to clarify the directions of academic research and details of biographies of historians. Archival documents show a poorly organized evacuation of the ‘humanities institutes’ of the Academy of Sciences from Moscow. The establishment of the institution of Commissioners and the decisive actions of academic leaders (first of all, S. M. Fayland) helped to restore the manageability of academic institutions in front-line Moscow (including the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR) in October-November 1941.

For Moscow historians, the involvement in the "Chronicles of the Patriotic War," which was organized by I.I. Minz, was essential during the period of siege and confusion. His goal was to create an independent Institute of History of the Patriotic War under his own leadership. He developed energetic activity in which dozens of employees of Moscow academic institutions were involved. In the long run, his efforts failed; the academic vertical order was preserved, no new institutions were created. Not the last role in this was played by the fact that the leadership of the Kazan Center of the Academy of Sciences was liquidated by J. Stalin just for showing independent initiatives. The Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow fully restored its activities in the summer of 1943.

The Institute was not suppressed; on the contrary, there was a hypercentralization, from which the Institute of History managed to get some gain: the Institute of the History of Material Culture came under the leadership of historians. And after the end of the war the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR remained an influential academic institute for humanities, which carried out coordination activities in the field of historical research.
