Abstract

This article attempts to analyze some archival documents, as well as the diary, journalistic and memoir heritage of the Russian Abroad of the 1920s to consider the image of the League of Nations, which was formed in the discourse of its representatives during the most difficult period of psychological and social adaptation in a foreign country. Since 1921 this very first international security organization and its High Commission for Russian refugees led by F. Nansen played the key role in settling of essential problems of these people outside their native land, including determination of a future legal status of Russian stateless people. Though, emigrants themselves could participate in this work only indirectly that certainly could not but affect their general attitude to the League of Nations. On the one hand, they paid tribute to Nansen for his selflessness and outstanding energy, but on the other hand — these people did not hide their disappointment at his simultaneous cooperation with the Soviet authorities in organizing emergency relief to famine victims in Russia. Besides that, many representatives of the Russian Diaspora also considered Nansen's view of repatriation as the most effective solution to the refugee problem to be erroneous, they also complained that the so-called "Russian question" was not of primary importance in the League's agenda from the very beginning. Yet, despite the fairly critical attitude of emigrants to certain aspects of the functioning of the historical predecessor of the UN, in general, and its special office for refugees, in particular, in the early 1920s, most of them sincerely believed that without the intervention of the League of Nations in the fate of the Russian Diaspora, the salvation of the latter was impossible.
