Abstract

At the beginning of the article reveals historical and cultural specifics of Czech nation as small nation without elite, with characteristic egalitarian features and prevalence of social orientations over individualistic. Family and nation are its fundamental values. Czech people prefer realistic aims and solve them thanks to diligence and national solidarity. For Czech man is characteristic combination of conservatism and collectivism, specific “village mentality”. Socialism in Czechoslovakia was born from aspirations of majority of people, for which justice and equality seemed more moral then injustice and inequality of capitalism. Socialist Czechoslovakia never regarded as periphery of socialist system, but as civilizational standard, went in the vanguard of modernization processes. Czechia and Eastern Germany were the only exception in social system as industrial and urban societies. Czech lands passed early-industrial stage of societal development at the third quarter of XIX century and repeated this stage century later together with the rest countries of Central and South-East Europe. At a period of industrialization of 1950s Czechia played a role of “locomotive” of economic rise of all socialist system. At 1960s Czech society transformed into society of mass consumption at special – nonwestern – version, when free time is more important than material level of life. Here formed special Easteuropean type of demographic behavior with high marriage, birth and divorce rates. Initiated by Czechs Prague spring became beginning of socialist system end. But Czechs were the last in the region to reject from this system, their revolution of 1989 entered into history as “velvet”. No contradiction in it. Both in 1968 and 1989 only 5% of population preferred capitalist way of development. Left values in Czech environment for sure predominate. Their life in contemporary Europe Czechs estimate not very positively. Material prosperity for today Czechs even more important than health. 3/4 of citizens criticize government, parties and policy.
